Android media player features 4K video and optimized Kodi 15

Sep 17, 2015 — by Eric Brown — 1,702 views

Cloud Media’s “Open Hour Gecko” is an $89, quad-core Android media player with an optimized Kodi 15 app that supports HD audio passthrough and 4K H.264/265.

Last month, Cloud Media tackled the higher end of the media player market with its $449, dual-boot Linux and Android Popcorn Hour A-500 Pro. The $89 Open Hour Gecko brings us back to more familiar Android media player turf.

There’s no Linux option here, or high-end features like the A-500 Pro’s ESS SABRE32 Audio DAC, but the device features the Android version of the new Kodi 15 multimedia distribution. Cloud Media has optimized the distro for the Gecko with features including HD audio passthrough, framerate sync, 3D BDISO, 4K H.264/265, and SAMBA/NFS.

The HD audio passthrough feature should boost the audio quality feature over typical Android media players, and the 4K support provides video resolution at up to 2160p @ 30Hz. The framerate sync feature is said to help the HDMI port adjust to changes in video framerate. The SAMBA/NFS support enables users to stream content over SAMBA and NFS protocols from network-attached storage (NAS) devices, and 3D BDISO supports 3D video content.
