Arduino Uno-like board controls three-phase EV motors

Uniti’s “Uniti ARC” is an open source, Arduino Uno compatible microcontroller board, designed for controlling three-phase motors in electric vehicles.

Swedish electric car startup Uniti calls the Uniti ARC “the world’s first open-source commercial development board for three phase motors with Arduino Uno compatibility.” Together with an optional ARC motor shield and a free software suite built around the Arduino IDE, Uniti ARC is designed for makers, startups, educators, and others who want to prototype three-phase-motor electric vehicles, says the company. Uniti is making its own electric car prototype using the platform.

In addition to supporting electric vehicles, the Uniti ARC controller board can be used with other equipment using three phase motors. Additional device targets could include CNC-machines, conveyor belts, or 3D printers, says the company.

Uniti has yet to post detailed specs, but the Uniti ARC is said to offer the following key features:
  • Processor — 16MHz ATmega64M1 MCU with Arduino IDE compatibility
  • Motor control — 12-bit high speed 3-phase motor controller; optional ARC motor shield
  • USB port (based on photo)
  • Other I/O:
    • CAN 2.0 A/B transceiver for real-time communication
    • 10-bit digital to analog converter
    • 4x analog comparators
    • 23x Arduino-like DIO pins
  • Power — 5V power input

The Uniti ARC will be available for sale on May 26 at 499 SEK (Swedish Krona), or about $60.10, and will ship in August.
