Compact module runs Ubuntu on quad-core G-Series Steppe Eagle

Oct 20, 2016 — by Eric Brown — 609 views

Arbor has launched an Ubuntu-ready COM Express Compact Type 6 module with a quad-core G-Series Steppe Eagle SoC, plus DDI, USB, SATA, and PCIe connectivity.

The Arbor Technology EmETXe-a58M0 adopts the 95 x 95mm COM Express Compact Type 6 form factor, which it used for last year’s 5th Gen Intel Core based EmETXe-i88U0 module. The new EmETXe-a58M0 expands upon the second generation AMD Embedded G-Series SoC family known as Steppe Eagle. The EmETXe-a58M0 supports fanless, and typically display-oriented, embedded devices such as control and automation, digital gaming, communication infrastructure, thin clients, digital displays, and medical-imaging equipment.

Arbor has soldered down a quad-core, 1.2GHz GX-412HC G-Series SoC with a lean 7W TDP. Although the GX-412HC launched with an AMD Radeon 8000 graphics engine clocked to 300MHz, Arbor says the engine’s speed has been increased to 800MHz. The Radeon HD 8000E engine supports DirectX 11.1, OpenGL 4.2, and OpenCL 1.2. In addition, Arbor says the SoC now offers a Core Boost Frequency function to ensure appropriate processor overclocking.

The module supports up to 8GB 1666MT/s SDRAM, and offers a microSD slot. One of the two 600Mbps SATA interfaces can be swapped for an optional SATA NANDrive using the ASM1456 SATA switch. There’s also a Realtek RTL8111E GbE controller and 7x PCIe x 1 Gen 2 lanes.

Dual display support is provided via analog RGB and dual DDI ports. Supported display formats include VGA, DisplayPort 1.2, and DVI/HDMI 1.4a. The EmETXe-a58M0 is further equipped with 2x USB 3, 7x USB 2.0, SDIO, and HD audio interfaces. The +12V, +5VSB device provides ACPI 3.0 power management and can handle commercial 0 to 60ºC temperatures.

The board announcements on this site are a bit weird. Either it’s new from china and has an actual price in the tens of dollars region, or it’s new from the US and has an undisclosed price. I’ve taken to reading the title, scrolling to the bottom to see if there’s a price and ignoring it if there isn’t 😛

    Undisclosed price. Un-interested.
