Expansive Mini-ITX board runs Linux on Skylake

Jun 28, 2016 — by Eric Brown — 1,280 views

Axiomtek’s “MANO500” Mini-ITX board supports 6th Gen Intel Core, Pentium, and Celeron CPUs, and offers three SATA, two GbE, and mini-PCIe with SIM.

Mini-ITX boards are typically among the first form-factors to support new Intel Core chips along with COM Express modules. We’re not sure why Axiomtek, one of the more prolific of embedded vendors, waited so long to launch its first 6th Generation Intel Core (“Skylake”) based Mini-ITX board, but it’s a welcome edition. Back in April, the company announced a Skylake-based PICO500 SBC using the smaller Pico-ITX form factor.

The new MANO0500 follows in a line of other Axiomtek Intel Core Mini-ITX boards such as the 4th Gen “Haswell” MANO881. Like the Portwell WADE-8017 Mini-ITX board, it supports 6th Gen Core i7/i5/i3 chips that fit into an LGA1151 socket, which would suggest support for higher end S-Series Cores. It also supports related Pentium and Celeron chips, and uses the Intel H110 companion chipset and, depending on the processor, Intel HD Graphics 530 or 510.

The 170 x 170mm MANO500, which is aimed at gaming, digital signage, medical, and “other Industrial IoT applications,” supports up to 32GB of dual channel DDR4-2133 RAM via a pair of 288-pin Long-DIMM sockets. The board provides dual Gigabit Ethernet ports with WOL and PXE, three SATA-600 slots, and an mSATA interface. Expansion includes PCIe x16, mini-PCIe, and SIM card slots for wireless radios.

To channel Skylake’s multimedia firepower, you get five display options with triple display support. Coastline ports include HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA ports, and you can choose between the default LVDS connection or optional eDP.

The MANO500 is further equipped with four USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, five RS-232 ports, and a RS-232/422/485 port. Eight channels of digital I/O are provided along with HD Audio, PS/2, a watchdog, and hardware monitoring. The board has an ATX power connector, and supports 0 to 60°C temperature operation. OS support includes Ubuntu and Fedora Linux, as well as Windows 7, 8.1, and 10

Further information

The MANO500 will be available soon at an undisclosed price. More information may be found at Axiomtek’s MANO500 product page.
