Linux-ready A20 SBC offers lots of display and wireless options

May 26, 2015 — by Eric Brown — 960 views

Faytech’s “FTA20” SBC runs Linux or Android on an Allwinner A20, and offers I/O including HDMI, VGA, LVDS, GbE, and WiFi, with optional Bluetooth and GPS.

The FTA20 is the second generation SBC for Shenzhen-based display vendor Faytech, which offers capacitive touchscreens ranging up to 21.5 inches for the SBC. Unlike the many Allwinner A20 SBCs designed for the hacker community, the FTA20 offers a wider variety of standard and optional features, and is designed for industrial use.

The FTA20 combines the dual-core, 1GHz Cortex-A7 SoC with the usual Mali-400 MP2 GPU, and offers 1GB of RAM, 8GB of flash, and what appears to be a full-size SD slot. There’s also an internal SATA connector.

Display interfaces include coastline HDMI and VGA ports, as well as an internal LVDS interface. Other coastline ports include a gigabit Ethernet port with PoE support, dual USB 2.0 host ports, and a USB OTG port. Two more USB interfaces are available internally, along with dual serial interfaces, four TTL UARTs, 24x GPIOs, and audio I/O, including 3W amp support.

WiFi is standard, while a separate SKU adds Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. A mini-PCIe slot and SIM card slot are also available. The fanless 178 x 80mm board supports a -20 to 70℃ temperature range.

The FTA20 ships with Android 4.2 and Linux, with drivers available on a DVD. The CNXSoft report that alerted us to the product calls the online documentation “dismal.” In our view, it’s really more minimalistic than dismal, and unfortunately this is still not so atypical for an industrial OEM board.
