NAS-targeted Skylake Mini-ITX loads up on SATA, GbE, PCIe

Sep 26, 2016 — by Eric Brown — 2,397 views

Aaeon’s Linux-friendly “EMB-Q170C” Mini-ITX board targets NAS applications with 6th Gen Intel Core CPUs, 6x SATA III, 4x USB 3.0, and PCIe x8 and M.2 slots.

Aaeon’s EMB-Q170C Mini-ITX board is the most storage-rich member of its EMB-Q170 line of Mini-ITX boards, following the EMB-Q170A, EMB-Q170B, and EMB-H110B boards announced in March. Like these boards it runs Fedora or Ubuntu Linux, as well as Windows, on Intel’s high-end “S Series” 6th Gen “Skylake” Core CPUs with an LG1151 socket and a Q170 chipset.

Whereas the EMB-Q170A and EMB-H110B each have two 6Gbps SATA 3.0 ports, and the EMB-Q170B has four, the EMB-Q170C has six, thereby expanding the range of applications from ATMs, digital signage, and PoS to network-attached storage (NAS).

The EMB-Q170C has a single M.2 E-key slot for low profile add-ons. This compares to M.2 M-key and E-key slots on the EMB-Q170B, mini-PCIe half- and full-size slots on the EMB-H11B, and a single M.2 E-key slot on the EMB-Q170A. For applications that can tolerate the Z-height of PCIe expansion cards, the EMB-Q170C provides a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot, in contrast to PCIe Gen3 x16, x4, and x1 slots on the EMB-Q170A, EMB-Q170B, and EMBH110B, respectively.
