Pico-ITX SBC runs Linux on 1.9GHz quad-core Atom SoC

Mar 20, 2015 — by Eric Brown — 3,452 views

Axiomtek’s “PICO840” Pico-ITX SBC features a quad- or dual-core Intel Atom, and offers multiple video ports, plus GbE, SATA, serial, USB, and Mini-PCIe I/O.

The PICO840 is a lower-powered, but more energy efficient alternative to the similarly Pico-ITX based PICO880 single board computer, which runs on a 4th Gen Intel Core processor. The 100 x 72mm PICO840 is said to support PoS systems, mobile medical monitors, compact panel PCs, and other embedded systems with tight space constraints. No OS support was mentioned, but we are confident the PICO840 runs Linux.

The PICO840 SBC has fewer interfaces than the PICO880, but supports a wider temperature range of -40 to 70°C. You get a choice of a quad-core, 1.91GHz Intel Atom E3845 or dual-core, 1.75GHz Atom E3827 system-on-chip.

You can load up to 8GB DDR3L RAM, and store data via a SATA-300 interface or the mSATA port available on the single mini-PCIe slot. An LVDS connection and a choice of HDMI or VGA ports provide you with several video options.

Although the press release says there are dual gigabit Ethernet ports, we’ll trust the product page, data sheet, and photos, which show only one. Additional I/O includes four USB 2.0 ports, two RS-232/422/485 serial ports, and audio I/O. There’s also an optional Axiomtek AX93283 I/O slot and board for further expansion.
