Rugged fanless box-PC features triple GbE, optional wireless

Dec 8, 2015 — by Eric Brown — 1,279 views

Adlink’s “Matrix MXE-1400” is a compact, rugged industrial PC built around a quad-core Atom, with three GbE ports, SATA and CFast, and optional wireless.

The Matrix MXE-1400 is the first of a new series of industrial computers that continues Adlink Matrix E series features such as fanless operation, cable-free construction, and ruggedization. The MXE-1400 is smaller and lighter, however, and for the first time squeezes all the I/O onto one side of the unit for greater convenience. Aaeon touts this same one-side I/O benefit, as well as a cable-less design, on its recently announced, Intel Atom D2550-based Boxer-6914 industrial PC.

The Matrix MXE-1400 offers a more powerful, up-to-date Atom E3845, a quad-core, 22nm SoC, which is typically clocked to 1.91GHz. No OS support was listed, but previous MXE computers have run Linux and various flavors of Windows. As usual, the system is supported with Adlink’s SEMA Cloud remote monitoring solution. The fanless, wall-mountable system offers extended temperature support and shock and vibration resistance, and is designed for applications supporting intelligent transportation, in-vehicle multimedia, surveillance, and factory automation, says Adlink.

Many of the Adlink MXE devices we’ve covered recently are fairly spare, Intel Quark or Atom-based Internet of Things gateways, such as the Atom E3845-based MXE-200i. The MXE-1400, however, more closely resembles Adlink’s more feature-rich, Intel 4th Gen Core based MXE-5300.

In addition to the new single-sided port configuration, the MXE-1400 is notably smaller and lighter than the MXE-5300 at 210 x 170 x 70mm and two kilograms, and the extended temperature option extends further to -40 to 70°C. A few features are scaled down — for example, the MXE-1400 has three Gigabit Ethernet ports instead of four, and only one DisplayPort instead of two.

The MXE-1400 ships with 2GB of DDR3L-1600 RAM, but supports up to 8GB. As before, there’s a CFast slot, as well as a 2.5-inch swappable SATA bay, with optional HDDs and SSDs. In addition to the three GbE ports, the MXE-1400 provides a USB 3.0 port, six USB 2.0 ports, audio jacks, and DVI-I and DisplayPorts. Industrial features include isolated DIO and six serial ports, including four RS232/422/485 ports.

Dual mini-PCIe slots and a uSIM slot support optional WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, or LTE modules. Although it’s not mentioned in the press release, product page, or datasheet, the YouTube introduction farther below mentions the availability of optional I/O modules for the series including modules for railway and vision systems, and a module with M12 ports, which offer chemical and moisture sealing for medical and food-safe environments. No details on how these vertical market-oriented modules interface with the system were offered, however.
