Tough Android phablet does sensing, scanning, 3G

Feb 2, 2016 — by Eric Brown — 0 views

Aaeon’s rugged “RTC-600A” handheld runs Android on a TI OMAP4470, and provides a 5.7-inch screen, 8-hour battery, and wireless, sensor, and scanner features.

Aaeon calls the RTC-600A a “rugged tablet handheld,” but it’s a pipsqueak compared to Aaeon’s ruggedized, 10.1-inch RTC-900R. The RTC-600A features phablet-like diagonal screen dimensions of 5.7 inches, but the more notable dimension is its 22mm thickness. Aaeon has made use of the extra space to add physical buttons along the sides of the device to augment the capacitive touchscreen without sacrificing screen space to a QWERTY keyboard.

Like Intermec’s 4-inch CN51 — one of many rugged Android handhelds we’ve covered in recent years — the RTC-600A is equipped with a 1.5GHz, dual-core Cortex-A9 TI OMAP4470 SoC. It also similarly provides 1GB RAM, 16GB flash, and a microSD slot.

The 5.7-inch, 1280 x 720-pixel screen offers backlighting, 420 nits of brightness, and 178°C viewing angles. It’s protected with Gorilla Glass, and the entire device is shielded from ingress per IP67. The handheld also provides extended temperature operation to -20 to 50°C, as well as Mil-STD-810G compliant vibration and drop resistance.

Standard wireless features include WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Depending on the SKU, however, you’ll get a 3G radio, and the GPS can be upgraded with GLONASS and AGPS support (see chart below). The RTC-600A is further equipped with a 5-megapixel camera and a 1D barcode scanner. A 2D scanner and NFC-compatible RFID are also included on some SKUs.

The RTC-600A features light, G-, and gyro sensors, plus a vibrator and various function and scanner keys. The device ships with USB host and micro-USB ports, and audio features including a 3.5mm jack, speaker, mic, and volume keys. A docking connector is available for an optional docking station.

The device has a DC input, as well as a pair of hot-swappable 7.4V, 1530mAh Li-Ion batteries, with each one giving you eight hours, according to the datasheet. The announcement, however, pushes this to 10 hours, depending on usage, and claims up to eight days of standby time.
