Tough box-PCs support dual GbE, dual displays, wireless

Jun 17, 2015 — by Eric Brown — 818 views

Axiomtek has spun three slim, rugged “eBox” PCs with Atom E3800 or Celeron J1900 SoCs that include dual GbEs, SATA and mSATA storage, and optional wireless.

Like Axiomtek’s eBOX620-841-FL (quad-core Atom E3845) and eBOX638-840-FL (quad-core Celeron J1900), the new eBOX625-841-FL, eBOX625-842-FL, and eBOX626-841-FL are fanless, embedded computers that run on 22nm Bay Trail system-on-chips. The “841” models tap the dual-core, 1.46GHz Atom E3826 while the eBOX625-842-FL goes for the same 2GHz Celeron J1900 found on the eBOX638-840-FL. All three models support extended operating temperature ranges, for example -40 to +55°C on the 842.

The eBOX625-841-FL and eBOX625-842-FL are identical aside from their processors, as well as the fact that the Celeron-based 842 model adds 8-channel DIO. The Atom-based eBOX626-841-FL is the same as the Atom-based eBOX625-841-FL except that it has a different wide-range 10 to 34VDC power supply (see spec list below). The only other difference is that the 626 model adds a third COM port (RS232) in addition to the dual RS-232/422/485 ports found on all three.

The three new eBox systems measure 200 x 120 x 46mm, which is a bit slimmer in height than the otherwise identically dimensioned, Atom-based eBOX620-841-FL, and almost half the weight at 1.1 kg. The three newcomers are all much smaller and lighter than the boxy, Celeron-based eBOX638-840-FL. The fanless systems all support temperature ranges between 20 to 55 or 60°C when equipped with special, optional SSDs, and they all offer IP40-protected enclosures and rated vibration resistance.

The three systems support up to 8GB of DDR3L 1066/1333 SDRAM, and provide 2.5-inch SATA bays with optional HDDs and SDDs. There’s also an mSATA port, a SIM card slot, and a pair mini-PCIe slots with USB support. Axiomtek provides optional WiFi and GPS modules, as well as three antenna connectors.

The new eBoxes each include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA and HDMI ports with dual display support, and four USB 2.0 ports. You also get audio I/O and the aforementioned serial ports. Both products are listed only with WES7/8 support, but the very similar previous models were said to run Linux, and we feel confident these new models can do the same.
