Tough Pico-ITX SBC packs 1.91GHz quad-core Atom E3800

[Updated: June 16] — Congatec’s 100 x 70mm “Conga-PA3” Pico-ITX SBC runs Linux on an Atom E3800, and offers soldered RAM, dual mini-PCIe slots, and optional -40 to 85°C support.

Like Congatec’s Conga-IA3 Mini-ITX board announced last November, the Conga-PA3 runs Linux or Windows on Intel Atom E3800 system-on-chips. Like rival Kontron’s pITX-E38, it does so using the much smaller, 100 x 70mm Pico-ITX form factor.

The Conga-PA3 can operate at an optional -40 to 85°C industrial temperature range, and is designed for industrial applications in harsh, 24/7 operating environments such as passively cooled, enclosed automation and control systems, says Congatec. Other applications include decentralized, distributed intelligence, robotics, intelligent measurement and analysis devices, and IoT devices, says the company. Seven-year support is said to be available.

The default SoC choices include the 1.91GHz, quad-core Atom E3845, with 2MB L2 cache and a 10W TDP, and the 1.46GHz, dual-core Atom E3826 with 1MB cache and a 7W TDP. Other Bay Trail Atoms down to the single-core, 5W E3815 are also available on request.

There’s only half the RAM of the Kontron Pico-ITX board, with 4GB of DDR3L soldered down (in contrast to Kontron’s use of an SODIMM), but the two SBCs are otherwise fairly similar. Coastline ports are limited to a gigabit Ethernet port, dual USB 3.0 ports, and a DP++ port that supports DisplayPort and HDMI 1.4. There’s support for full HD video, as well as DirectX 11.1, OpenGL 3.2, and OpenCL 1.2.

Internally, you’ll find three USB 2.0 interfaces, one of which is a client port, as well as 24-bit, dual-channel LVDS connection. For storage, you get 6Gbps SATA, an mSATA slot shared with one of the two half-size mini-PCIe slots, as well as a microSD slot.

Other features include internal audio I/O, S/PDIF out, and an RS-232 serial interface. The Conga-PA3 is further equipped with a 12V power supply, and a Congatec embedded controller that features LPC and I2C buses, GPIO, buttons, LEDs, a watchdog, non-volatile user storage, statistics, power loss control, and more (maybe even an RS232/485/422 header).
